23.13 Proof of Categorical Equivalence Theorem
In previous article, we constructed two core functors:
- Discretization Functor (Physics → Computation);
- Continuization Functor (Computation → Physics).
These two functors provide “translation” between physical universe and computational universe:
- “discretizes” physical universe into computational universe;
- “reconstructs” physical universe from computational universe.
But this is not enough! We need to prove: These two translations are mutually inverse processes, i.e.:
- Physics → Computation → Physics ≈ Original physics (recovered after round trip);
- Computation → Physics → Computation ≈ Original computation (recovered after round trip).
This is core content of categorical equivalence theorem. This article will give complete proof, which is final closure of GLS unified theory.
Core Questions:
- What is categorical equivalence? Why not simple “mutual inverse”?
- How to prove (round-trip physical universe)?
- How to prove (round-trip computational universe)?
- How are complexity geometry and unified time scale preserved under equivalence?
This article is based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6 and appendix.
1. Why Do We Need “Categorical Equivalence”? From Photos to Natural Isomorphism
1.1 Everyday Analogy: Photo and Real Person
Imagine you take a photo of a friend, then draw a portrait based on photo:
Real Person (Physical Universe):
- Three-dimensional, moves, has expressions;
- Has complete physical existence.
Photo (Computational Universe):
- Two-dimensional plane, static, fixed instant;
- Is “discrete record” of real person.
Portrait (Reconstructed Physical Universe):
- Drawn based on photo, attempts to restore real person;
- Is “continuous image” inferred from “discrete record”.
Core Questions:
- Is portrait “same” as real person?
- Photo → Portrait → New photo, is it “same” as original photo?
1.2 Three Levels of “Sameness”
Level 1: Strict Equality (Too Strong):
- Requires portrait and real person identical at every atomic position → Impossible!
- Photo → Portrait → New photo, requires pixels completely consistent → Too strict!
Level 2: Isomorphism (Appropriate):
- Portrait “captures” main features of real person (facial features, proportions, expression);
- New photo and original photo “essentially same” (may differ slightly in angle, lighting);
- This is intuitive meaning of natural isomorphism!
Level 3: Similarity (Too Weak):
- Portrait “resembles” real person, but loses much information;
- New photo and original photo “somewhat similar”, but differences large.
Categorical Equivalence requires Level 2: Not strict equality, but controllable isomorphism.

1.3 Analogy in Computational Universe
In GLS theory:
Round-Trip Physical Universe:
Question: Is same as ?
- Not strictly equal: After discretization then continuization, coordinate system may change, field representation may differ;
- But has natural isomorphism : Spacetime geometry, causal structure, scattering data “essentially” same!
Round-Trip Computational Universe:
Question: Is same as ?
- Not strictly equal: After continuization then discretization, configuration encoding may change;
- But has natural isomorphism : Transition rules, complexity distance, information structure “essentially” same!
2. Equivalence Axioms: Four Technical Assumptions
Source Theory: Based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6.1
Before proving equivalence theorem, we need to clarify four technical axioms. These axioms are not “assumed out of thin air”, but natural requirements of QCA theory, unified time scale theory, Gromov-Hausdorff convergence theory.
2.1 Axiom E1: QCA Universality
Statement:
- Any has QCA realization;
- Any has QCA realization, and control-complexity geometry compatible with unified time scale structure of physical universe.
Physical Meaning:
- QCA is “common language of physics and computation”;
- Physical universe can be simulated by QCA (physical version of Church-Turing thesis);
- Computational universe can be realized by QCA (physical realizability).
Everyday Analogy:
- Axiom E1 like “any map can be represented with latitude-longitude coordinates, any GPS navigation can be displayed with map”.
2.2 Axiom E2: Existence of Continuous Limit
Statement:
- For any physically realizable computational universe , its complexity graph converges in Gromov-Hausdorff sense to some control manifold as discrete scale ;
- Control manifold can be further extended to spacetime manifold .
Physical Meaning:
- Discrete computation, after “coarse-graining”, emerges continuous geometry;
- This is core result of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence from Article 23.9.
Everyday Analogy:
- Axiom E2 like “pixel image, when viewed zoomed out, looks like continuous photo”.
Mathematical Statement: and volume, dimension, curvature simultaneously converge.
2.3 Axiom E3: Consistency of Scattering and Time Scale
Statement:
- Scattering matrix family of QCA approximates scattering data of physical universe in continuous limit;
- Unified time scale master ruler preserved between them: where is controllable discretization error.
Physical Meaning:
- Scattering data is “fingerprint of remote observation”, should be preserved under discretization;
- Unified time scale is “computational clock”, should be consistent under continuization.
Everyday Analogy:
- Axiom E3 like “photo colors should basically match real person’s skin tone, cannot come out completely different color”.
Mathematical Statement:
2.4 Axiom E4: Physical Realization of Simulation Maps
Statement:
- Any morphism in can be realized at QCA level as local reversible map;
- Any simulation map in can be realized through map of control-scattering systems.
Physical Meaning:
- Physical symmetries can be realized by unitary transformations of QCA;
- Computational simulations can be realized by adjusting physical control parameters.
Everyday Analogy:
- Axiom E4 like “rotation of map corresponds to rotation of real world, change of GPS route corresponds to change of real roads”.

3. Step 1: Round-Trip Physical Universe
Source Theory: Based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6.2
3.1 Construction of Natural Isomorphism
Given physical universe object , we construct round-trip process:
Step 1: Discretization (Functor ):
- Configuration set is basis vector labels of QCA lattice states;
- Transition rules are adjacency relations of QCA evolution;
- Complexity from unified time scale integral;
- Information structure from scattering data.
Step 2: Continuization (Functor ):
- Spacetime manifold is Gromov-Hausdorff limit of control manifold;
- Metric constructed from control metric and unified time scale;
- Field content generated from QCA local operator algebra;
- Scattering data is QCA scattering matrix family.
Question: Is same as ?
3.2 Construction of Natural Isomorphism
Theorem 3.1 (Round-Trip Physical Universe): Under axioms E1-E4, there exists natural isomorphism
Proof:
1. Isomorphism of Spacetime Geometry:
By axiom E2, complexity graph Gromov-Hausdorff converges to control manifold as , and control manifold constructed from QCA realization of original physical universe, therefore: where is reconstructed control manifold.
Key Insight: Limit of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence is unique in isometric sense, therefore exists isometric map: satisfying (pullback metrics equal).
Extend to spacetime manifold: define: then (in Lorentz signature sense).
2. Isomorphism of Field Content:
Local operator algebra of QCA generates field algebra in continuous limit. Since QCA realization comes from discretization of original physical universe, exists natural algebra isomorphism: mapping original field operators to reconstructed field operators.
3. Isomorphism of Unified Time Scale:
By axiom E3: under pullback of :
Take continuous limit , get:
4. Isomorphism of Scattering Data:
QCA scattering matrix family constructed precisely to approximate original scattering data , therefore: under frequency map :
5. Definition of Natural Isomorphism:
Combining above four isomorphisms, define:
This is isomorphism of physical universe, preserving all structures of spacetime, fields, time scale, scattering data.
QED.
Everyday Analogy:
- Real person → photo → portrait, portrait and real person “essentially same”: Facial proportions, expression all preserved;
- Not “pixel-level identical” (coordinates may differ), but “geometric-level identical” (distance, curvature, topology all same).
3.3 Naturality Verification
Definition 3.2 (Naturality): Natural isomorphism needs to satisfy: For any physical morphism , following diagram commutes:
η_U η_U'
U ---------> G(F(U)) U' ---------> G(F(U'))
|| | | |
f G(F(f)) f G(F(f))
|| | | |
v v v v
U' --------> G(F(U')) U' ---------> G(F(U'))
η_U' η_U'
I.e.: .
Verification:
By axiom E4, physical morphism realized at QCA level as unitary map , induces:
- Configuration map ;
- Control manifold map .
In continuous limit, exactly corresponds to spacetime extension of , and construction of consistent for all objects, therefore commutative diagram automatically holds.
This proves is natural isomorphism (not just isomorphism between objects, but also compatible with morphisms).

4. Step 2: Round-Trip Computational Universe
Source Theory: Based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6.2
4.1 Construction of Natural Isomorphism
Given computational universe object , we construct round-trip process:
Step 1: Continuization (Functor ):
- Spacetime manifold is GH limit of control manifold;
- Scattering data is QCA scattering matrix family.
Step 2: Discretization (Functor ):
- Configuration set is basis vector labels of QCA;
- Transition rules are adjacency relations of QCA evolution.
Question: Is same as ?
4.2 Construction of Natural Isomorphism
Theorem 4.1 (Round-Trip Computational Universe): Under axioms E1-E4, there exists natural isomorphism
Proof:
1. Isomorphism of Configuration Set:
Original computational universe has QCA realization by axiom E1, configuration set corresponds to some basis .
After continuization get physical universe , its QCA realization Hilbert space related to original through isometric map of control manifold:
At QCA level, exists unitary map: induces basis map:
2. Isomorphism of Transition Rules:
Original transition rules defined by QCA evolution operator :
Reconstructed transition rules defined by QCA evolution operator after continuization:
By unitarity of :
By axiom E3, in continuous limit: therefore:
This proves preserves transition structure.
3. Isomorphism of Complexity Function:
Original complexity:
Reconstructed complexity:
By axiom E3, and consistent under control manifold map , therefore:
Take continuous limit :
4. Isomorphism of Information Structure:
Information quality function defined by task distribution . Reconstructed defined by task distribution after continuization.
By axiom E1, QCA realization guarantees task information preserved under round trip:
5. Definition of Natural Isomorphism:
Combining above four isomorphisms, define:
This is isomorphism of computational universe (bijection of simulation map), preserving all structures of transition, complexity, information.
QED.
Everyday Analogy:
- Photo → Portrait → New photo, new photo and original photo “essentially same”: Composition, colors, content all preserved;
- Not “pixel-level identical” (encoding may differ), but “information-level identical” (identifiable content all same).
4.3 Naturality Verification
Definition 4.2 (Naturality): Natural isomorphism needs to satisfy: For any simulation map , commutative diagram:
Verification:
By axiom E4, simulation map realized at control-scattering level, induces unitary map at QCA level, thus preserved in round-trip process. Verification of commutative diagram similar to physical morphism case (using consistent construction of functoriality and naturality).

5. Categorical Equivalence Theorem
Source Theory: Based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6.2
5.1 Main Theorem Statement
Theorem 5.1 (Categorical Equivalence, Final Theorem of GLS Unified Theory):
Under axioms E1-E4, functors constitute categorical equivalence, i.e.:
1. Essential Surjectivity at Object Level:
- Exists natural isomorphism ;
- Exists natural isomorphism .
2. Full Faithfulness at Morphism Level:
- For any :
- For any :
Physical Meaning:
This is not metaphor, but strict mathematical theorem!
5.2 Proof Summary
Proof:
Object Level:
- Theorem 3.1 gives : Physics → Computation → Physics ≈ Original physics;
- Theorem 4.1 gives : Computation → Physics → Computation ≈ Original computation;
- Both are natural isomorphisms, satisfy commutative diagrams for all objects.
Morphism Level:
- By axiom E4, physical morphisms and simulation maps one-to-one correspond through QCA level;
- Actions of and on morphisms are exactly this one-to-one correspondence;
- Therefore Hom sets isomorphic.
Combining object and morphism levels, get categorical equivalence.
QED.

6. Invariants: Complexity Geometry and Unified Time Scale
Source Theory: Based on euler-gls-info/06-categorical-equivalence-computational-physical-universes.md Section 6.3 and Appendix C.2
Categorical equivalence not only abstract correspondence, but also preserves core geometric invariants.
6.1 Soft Invariance of Complexity Geometry
Proposition 6.1 (Invariance of Complexity Geometry): Under categorical equivalence, complexity geometry is soft invariant:
1. For Physical Universe :
- Original control manifold geodesic distance ;
- Complexity distance after discretization;
- Reconstructed geodesic distance after continuization;
- Satisfies: where is controllable discretization error, tends to zero as .
2. For Computational Universe :
- Original complexity distance ;
- Control manifold geodesic distance after continuization;
- Reconstructed complexity distance after discretization;
- Satisfies:
Physical Meaning:
- Complexity geometry not “hard invariant” (pointwise equality), but “soft invariant” (equivalent at scale);
- Like distance on map and distance in real world: Not pixel-level identical, but scale consistent.
Proof Idea:
By Gromov-Hausdorff convergence (axiom E2): GH distance as .
Round-trip process:
By uniqueness of GH limit (in isometric sense), exists isometric map , therefore geodesic distances equal up to constant factor.
QED.
6.2 Stability of Unified Time Scale
Proposition 6.2 (Invariance of Unified Time Scale): Under categorical equivalence, unified time scale density is stable invariant:
1. Round-Trip Physical Universe:
2. Round-Trip Computational Universe:
Physical Meaning:
- Unified time scale is “computational clock”, preserved in round trip;
- Scattering master ruler uniquely determined by unitary evolution at QCA level, therefore stable in round trip.
Proof Idea:
By axiom E3, defined at QCA level by group delay of scattering matrix:
In round-trip process, unitary evolution of QCA preserved through control manifold map , therefore scattering matrix preserved in sense of gauge transformation: where is gauge transformation.
Since is trace (trace invariant under unitary transformation):
Therefore stable in round trip.
QED.
6.3 Synchronous Convergence of Volume, Dimension, Curvature
Proposition 6.3 (Synchrony of Geometric Invariants): Under categorical equivalence, volume growth, complexity dimension, discrete Ricci curvature of complexity geometry synchronously converge in round trip:
1. Volume Growth Function:
2. Complexity Dimension:
3. Ricci Curvature: where is Ollivier-Ricci curvature, is Ricci curvature of control metric .
Physical Meaning:
- Complexity geometry not only preserved in “distance”, but also preserved in “volume”, “dimension”, “curvature”;
- This is core result of Articles 23.4-5, strictly proved under categorical equivalence.

7. Physical Corollaries and Philosophical Implications
7.1 Strict Meaning of “Universe Is Computation”
Corollary 7.1: Under GLS theory framework, “universe is computation” has strict mathematical meaning:
This is not metaphor, analogy, or conjecture, but categorical equivalence theorem (Theorem 5.1).
Implications:
- Ontology: Physical universe and computational universe are “same reality” in two descriptions;
- Epistemology: Studying physics equivalent to studying computation, studying computation equivalent to studying physics;
- Methodology: Physical experiments can be computationally simulated, computational problems can be physically realized.
7.2 Three Levels of Equivalence
1. Weak Equivalence (Church-Turing Thesis):
- Any “effectively computable” problem can be computed by Turing machine;
- Doesn’t involve physics, only equivalence within computation theory.
2. Physical Church-Turing Thesis:
- Any physical process can be effectively simulated by quantum computer;
- Involves physics and computation, but only “simulation” relationship, not “equivalence”.
3. Strong Equivalence (GLS Categorical Equivalence, This Article):
- Physical universe and computational universe equivalent in category-theoretic sense;
- Not only can simulate, but “essentially same thing”!

7.3 Possibility of Experimental Verification
Corollary 7.2: Categorical equivalence predicts following experimental tests:
1. Observation of Complexity Geometry:
- Observe large-scale structure of universe, extract “cosmic complexity metric” (e.g., time scale of structure formation);
- Compare with complexity metric in quantum simulators;
- Prediction: Both consistent under unified time scale (within error range).
2. Measurement of Unified Time Scale:
- Measure group delay matrix through scattering experiments (e.g., high-energy collisions at LHC);
- Compute ;
- Compare with computation time in quantum simulators;
- Prediction: Ratio of two is universal constant (Planck time scale).
3. Quantum Gravity Emergence:
- Realize large-scale QCA evolution in quantum simulators (e.g., cold atom systems);
- Observe “emergent geometry” under Gromov-Hausdorff limit;
- Prediction: Emergent metric satisfies Einstein equations (under appropriate approximation).
7.4 Philosophical Implications
Upgraded Version of “it from bit”:
- Wheeler proposed “it from bit”: Physics (it) comes from information (bit);
- GLS theory proves: “it = bit” (in sense of categorical equivalence);
- Information not “source” of physics, but “another description” of physics.
Rigorization of Digital Physics:
- Wolfram et al. conjectured “universe is cellular automaton”;
- GLS theory proves: On QCA-realizable subclass, this is strict categorical equivalence;
- Not philosophical conjecture, but mathematical theorem.
Mechanism of Spacetime Emergence:
- Spacetime not “a priori container”, but “geometric representation of computation”;
- Control manifold emerges through Gromov-Hausdorff limit;
- Unified time scale connects discrete and continuous.
8. Popular Summary
8.1 Five-Sentence Summary
- Categorical Equivalence: Physical universe and computational universe not “similar”, but “two descriptions of same object”;
- Round-Trip Recovery: Physics → Computation → Physics ≈ Original physics (natural isomorphism ), Computation → Physics → Computation ≈ Original computation (natural isomorphism );
- Invariant Preservation: Complexity geometry, unified time scale, volume/dimension/curvature stable in round trip;
- Experimental Verification: Can verify equivalence relation through scattering experiments, quantum simulation, large-scale observation;
- Philosophical Upgrade: “it from bit” → “it = bit”, digital physics upgraded from conjecture to theorem.
